Eventual Height: 50 - 70ft (15 - 20m)
Enviroment: Fertile and well drained soil. Preferably not in shade.

The English Oak is famed for its strength as timber, but for the home gardener it makes a wonderful tree. Whilst it prefers well drained soil, this tree is fairly accommodating. In the autumn it becomes a larder for the surrounding wildlife as they feast on its fallen acorns.

Environment: Moist but well drained. Good urban tree, not worries about smoke and polution.

The Ash Tree is a found widely in the UK. Reaching heights of upto 40m this is a very tall, but graceful tree.

Man has had an interesting involvement with this tree over the centuries. Ash wood has been burnt to warn of evil spirits, and was thought to have medicinal qualities. The Vikings called it the 'Tree of life'.

This is an important timber tree put to many and varied uses. For the home gardener it's a natural and graceful tree that will complement any traditional or contemporary garden.

This is a hansome tree that lines many street up and down the country and especially in London. Dapled and flakey bark. Again another traditional British tree.

Austrian pine (Pinus nigra austriaca)

Environment: Tolerant - happy in most soil types

Pinus nigra, austriaca or maritima is one of the hardiest of conifers. Both Austrian and Maritime varieties are content in almost any soil type. They are one of the few conifers to succeed in coastal environments. They grow at a moderate rate and smell of fresh pine oils through Spring and Summer.

Native to Cumbria and North England, it isn't found much further North. Used in the middle ages to make musical instruments.
