Christmas Gardening - replanting your Christmas tree outdoors
If you are intending to reuse your Christmas tree, it's better to keep it in a container - a half-barrel is suitable - as the size will be more manageable. Keep the container on a trolley so it can be moved easily.

Christmas Gardening - greening your Christmas
Christmas is the time of year when many things are done to excess and unfortunately that can mean excessive waste, higher energy consumption and a steep increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

Christmas Gardening - winter planting
While it seems very late in the year, planting shrubs and trees is probably your best investment in late autumn gardening. Shrubs and trees are almost always discounted at this time of year so in addition to giving you something to do in the winter garden, savings can be substantial.

Christmas Gardening - winter tasks
It may come as a surprise, but mowing the lawn is already a year-round chore for thirty-five per cent of UK home-owners, according to the Natural Environment Research Council

Wildlife Christmas Tree
It's fun to turn an existing outdoor tree into a Christmas present for local wildlife and adds real variety and excitement to your winter garden.

Alternatives to Christmas Trees
Instead of a cut Christmas tree, sponsor the planting of more live trees in a damaged or poor ecosystem.

Choosing a Christmas Tree - Balsam and White Firs
The Balsam Fir is a beautiful dark-green colour with airy, flexible branches that may not be able to hold heavy ornaments as they will bend.

Choosing a Christmas Tree - Colorado Blue Spruce and Grand Fir
The Colorado Blue Spruce is a tree it can be difficult to find in the UK, although they were on sale in Harrods last year!

Caring for your tree
If you have a cut tree, rather than a rooted one, make a fresh cut across the bottom, about one inch above the original base, to remove any clogged wood that may not readily absorb water.
