| Description |
During the premiership of Robert Walpole, English lords and potentates showed their wealth and power by creating superb houses and gardens. Walpole commented on the good work being undertaken by Thomas Watson-Wentworth. In 1727 his offspring Thomas Wentworth set about building the ‘mock’ castle that now sits in the grounds which are filled with a collection of eighteenth century garden monuments. Garden features on the forty acre site include an azalea garden, a ‘secret’ Victorian flower garden, and Stainborough Castle, a stunning Gothic folly. The Gardens are located within the Stainborough Park conservation area and are part of the South Yorkshire Forest. |
