| Description | A medieval castle with the framework of a seventeenth century garden. The design, with balustraded terracaes and steps, is best understood as an English interpretation of a sixteenth century Italian garden. the terraced rose gardens are glorious. Roses, clematis and delphiniums soften the harshness of the great stone buttresses and ancient walls of the house itself. Best visited in spring or summer. The house and garden featured in the BBC Jane Eyre filmed in 2006, the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, staring Keira Knightley and the 1996 Franco Zeffirelli version of Jane Eyre. |
