| Description |
The Apprentice House was home to about sixty boys and girls who arrived there from parents who could not afford to keep them. The children lived very basically by today's standards – a doctor and school were provided but only to deliver trained and cheap mill-workers to local mills. The adjoining garden contains traditional varieties of vegetables, fruit and herbs, as well as geese and hens – it is gardened on the earliest organic lines, growing nothing later than could be found in seed catalogues dating back to 1900, and using a four year rotation system. The children of Apprentice House undoubtedly had to weed and water the gardens, as well as learning in the school. |
