| Description | extensive grounds near the centre of Cambridge. The buildings range from the medieval to the late twentieth century and the gardens have extensive lawns, magnificent and rare trees, and ponds that are home to large numbers of ducks and fish. The garden contains a fine Purple Beech, and trees planted by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at the Quatercentenary celebrations in 1984. The little pool in the corner beyond the Plane may have been used for swimming in 1690 or even earlier and it’s known that a changing hut in classical style was built about 1745, the present thatched hut dating from the mid- 19th century. In living memory the water in the pool was so dark with algae, that a Fellow who liked to swim the whole length along the bottom complained that he lost his way: a line was obligingly painted for him, and I still known as Jones's Line although the water is now purified and circulated. This may be the oldest swimming-bath in the country still in use. The lawn is used by Fellows for bowls and croquet. |
