Garden bench – planter design
Large outdoor planters are the ideal way to add a decorative touch to your outdoor space. Styles can range from traditional urns and tubs to ultra modern stainless steel or glass bowls and come in all shapes and sizes, from large, low bowl shaped flower containers to tall box-like planters that are ideal for small trees.
- Fibreglass planters are a low modern style of planter which add an extra decorative touch and they are available in a wide range of colours. Choosing a deep red, green or blue could compliment your flower scheme, while silver or black would also look fantastic with decorative stones and an assortment of cacti. An interesting new approach to these planters is the addition of lights behind coloured panels which mean you can actually have the planter glow gently in the dark.
- Tall ceramic planters are also available in a wide range of colours. These are among the largest of planters and sturdy enough to allow the planting of small trees like citrus and olives while allowing room for root growth – this is an ideal route to take if your garden is prone to frost and you can bring your trees into an unheated greenhouse or under shelter for winter.
- Wooden planter boxes are and ideal choice because they help avoid the temperature damage to both plants and boxes that can affect planters made from other materials. As most gardeners know damage can occur due to the expansion and contraction of soil and this is a real risk with terracotta planters which may actually fracture under the pressure. Wooden planter boxes contract and expand, meaning that this problem does not arise. Wooden planters are also excellent insulators. Wooden planters can be painted, left as natural wood, varnished or stained depending on the style of the house, and the type of garden you choose.
- Terracotta planters have been used since man first began to grow plants. When selecting a terracotta planter be sure to check for cracks and remember to soak the container overnight before using it to moisturise the clay. You should only leave these planters outside during temperate weather. You can colour wash terracotta to make it unique.
