Mulching
Ok so we have a large range of mulching mowers, all of the major brands have mulching and we have the Klippo here; can you tell us about mulching?
Mulching is something that is becoming more and more popular and for good reason. It makes life easier in that you don’t have to collect the grass and it actually has a beneficial effect on the grass as well. What we are doing is looking at the Klippo machine here which is one of the dedicated mulching mowers but the principals of what we are talking about is the same for any mower. The principal of mulching that that the grass is kept in the deck for a longer period of time, that means that the grass is cut more than once. If you cut the grass once it will rot from the cut end only, by mulching it you cut that same blade of grass up to 10 times which means that same blade of grass if cut once would rot down from one end but when cut 10 times will rot down from 19 ends so the speed of decomposition from that blade of grass is increased enormously.
So how quickly could that break down because somebody mentioned that the amount of grass that your get of an acre in one year can be up to 9 tonnes?
Your right, they do say that an acre of lawn will produce 9 tonnes of grass clippings, which is an awful lot of lawn clippings especially if you are collecting it all the time, so mulching is very popular for people with large gardens where collecting the grass isn’t a good option, certainly with parks and large gardens that are going to be mulching. Your right it speeds up the decomposition a lot and brings it down to a few days and because it’s cut so finely it means you don’t see it so much either. If you don’t collect the grass with a normal lawn mower then you will recognise the large patches of grass by the edge where as with mulching it cuts it that much finer so it speeds up the decomposition of the grass and also helps increase the PH level of the soil and as grass likes a height PH level you enhance the growth of the lawn and slows down the growth of weeds so mulching has a health benefit to your lawn.
