In 1882 Thomas Edison’s assistant, Edward Johnson, developed the idea of Christmas tree lights that ran on electricity. This innovation made outdoor Christmas tree lights possible. It didn’t take long for possible to become necessary - as early as 1912, the first illuminated trees appeared in Boston's public areas. Outdoor Christmas trees quickly became commonplace in North America and after the First World War, this novelty reached Europe and became widespread. In Canada, the fashion of the illuminated outdoor tree is very widespread and it is said that in the suburbs, there are almost as many Christmas trees outside as there are inside
To set up an outdoor light display
- Work out how many strings of lights you'll need based on your measurement of the tree - strings come in lengths from 25 lights to 200 lights. For trees and bushes, assume around 25 – 50 lights per foot of height, or double that number if you're using miniature lights.
- Make sure lights are intended to be used for outdoor Christmas tree lighting and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Any extension cords used for outdoor Christmas tree lights should also be intended specifically for use in the garden.
- Water and electricity don't mix, so keep any connections out of puddles and remember snow is just frozen water so if it settles on lights it’s a disaster waiting to happen! It’s a good idea to wrap the point where strings connect in a plastic bag tied with twine, not just to keep the damp out, but it helps you find the joins easily when you come to pack away.
- If re-using old outdoor Christmas tree lights, inspect the wires to ensure that there are no worn spots.
