Weird Gardens - 3
It may be news to you, and it was certainly news to me, but we have a new day to celebrate. World Naked Gardening Day (WNGD) will take place for the third time on Saturday, May 5, 2007 – and we’re all invited to join in by getting outdoors and gardening in the all together. It’s obviously not a British initiative, because we’d never have chosen May – it’s barely warm enough to cast your clouts in August, in our chilly climes!
The organisers say ‘gardening has a timeless quality, and anyone can do it young and old, singles or groups, the fit and infirm, urban and rural. An elderly lady in a Manhattan apartment can plant new annuals in her window box. Families can rake leaves in their back yard. Hikers can pull invasive weeds along their favourite stretch of trail. More daring groups can make rapid clothes-free sorties into public parks to do community-friendly stealth cleanups. They could be on to something ....
In 2002, over two hundred women in Nepal chose to plough their fields in the nude, in a desperate attempt to bring rain to their drought-stricken region. The monsoon began shortly afterwards, a report said yesterday. The women locked their husbands inside their houses and then stripped off to work their fields at midnight in a bid to appease the Hindu god of rain, Indra.
Only a couple of days after the naked ploughing, it began raining in western parts of the country. It seems the rain god Indra, who had been offended by the collapse of this ancient custom, was finally appeased - because the ritual worked so well that high rainfall flooded roads and washed out mountain paths.
