Wedding Cake Tree

Variegated giant dogwood (or wedding cake tree, as it is sometimes called) can be summed up in one word – spectacular!

I’ve got to be honest though, it’s a long term project, because it’s a tree than can be downright odd looking until it matures. When it attains full growth, the branches of this tree are held out as horizontal layers that bear brightly variegated leaves, giving the appearance of snow-white icing resting on the branches – hence the common name.

In May, the wedding cake tree also produces delicate, lacy white flowers that are followed in late summer by deep black berries. The berries glisten against the variegated leaves and are a favourite of birds. It looks at its best in front of a dark background, such as evergreen conifers, or against a dark wall or fence, when the lacy, elegant shape can be seen to best effect.

Because the branching structure, with the wide layered gaps between the branches, is the tree’s greatest wonder, you need to select a location with plenty of room for it to spread without pruning, which could quickly spoil its beauty. Ideally, you should allow at least 10 feet from the trunk to the nearest pathway.

Plant it in part shade in fertile, rich, well-drained soil and provide regular water during summer dry spells. While a ten year old plant will be lucky to make twelve feet, with about an equal spread, mature specimens, unpruned, will reach 25 to 35 feet in height with slightly less in spread.
