Unusual sheds

On a wild island, isolated by the turn of the tides, three upturned boats have been turned into sheds, an innovative way of recycling old hulls when they are no longer seaworthy and an unusual storage space for the gardeners' tools. Lindisfarne is home to the smallest garden ever designed by Gertrude Jekyll, a handkerchief of colour on a windswept canvas, set some way from the castle on the brink of the sea. The boat sheds are currently undergoing restoration following a serious fire in October 2005.

Two wooden sheds stand at the far end of the car park of a private doctor's surgery in West London. From the outside there's nothing to indicate they contain anything other than a few gardening tools, yet their horticultural appearance conceals a fully soundproofed state-of-the-art studio with separate vocal booth, belonging to the TMS collective. TMS (which stands for The Musical Shed) is a six-man business partnership producing hip-hop and garage music for white-label release. Making up the group are Pete Kelleher, Phillip Davenport, Tom Barnes, Gavin Jones and brothers Ben and Dan Kohn, whose father owns the surgery. Convinced by his son's desire to make music his career, Ben's father allowed the group to use the end of his car park for a studio, providing it took up no more space than one car. The need for planning permission ruled out the erection of a brick building, so the obvious solution was a wooden building - hence the highly unusual shed studio.

The Shed music and poetry venue was created by Simon Thackray in 1992. Based in the village of Hovingham The Shed is on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. All events are performed in front of Simon's old shed door in a venue that seats under a hundred people.
