Electric Lawnmowers

The electric lawnmower is the most popular lawnmower available today because they are both lightweight and easy to use. They do have some advantages: they are quieter than petrol mowers but faster than manual mowers, are low polluting and tend not to annoy neighbours.

Electric mowers can be the best solution for a small lawn – roughly speaking an electric mower will be around 1.5 horsepower while a petrol mower is generally around 3 horsepower, so for a larger lawn, using an electric mower can be tiring as the work rate can be very high.

The bulk of electric mowers have a rotating blade fixed centrally, this means the mower cuts grass directly beneath it in a circular fashion, described as rotary mowing. A real advantage of a rotary mower is the ease of cleaning and maintenance which is both simpler and quicker than looking after a cylinder mower.

The basic cutting method for a hover lawn mower is the same as for a rotary lawn mower but there is a fundamental difference in design. It is based in the skirt that surrounds the cutting blade and traps the down draught created by the rotation of the blades, this means that the lawn mower ‘hovers’ on a cushion of air and is therefore much less demanding to move round the lawn. This means that people with mobility problems or those of small stature, can use a hover mower with relative ease, but of course neither the rotary nor the hover mower will give you a beautifully striped lawn.

The hover mower is an easy to use lawn mower suitable for people who struggle to use larger or heavier mowers. Flymo Hover Mower courtesy of www.gardening-tools-direct.co.uk
