Choosing a Mulching Lawn Mower
So once you've decided that you would like a mulching mower, how do you set about choosing one?
There are several areas that should be considered in addition to the standard questions of weight and size in relation to your lawn that you should be asking yourself I relation to your mulching mower.
Mulching lawn mowers cut the grass repeatedly: this makes the clippings smaller, and then they blow it back and down into the turf layer to provide the mulching action. Obviously, both these actions require extra energy to be drawn from the engine's mower and so horsepower is an important consideration – the higher the hp of the mower, the easier it will find it to cut the grass up finely enough to provide a perfect mulch, this is a particular consideration if you are the kind of gardener who has a tendency to let the lawn become somewhat overgrown as this makes more demands on a mulching mower.
Top of the range mowers also have fans inside the mower housing to improve the mulching process and some mulching mowers have special design that lift the grass before cutting which helps them cut longer than usual grass.
Keen gardeners may also wish to invest in a model that allows them to fix a grass bag or box to the machine on some occasions. This is useful if you want to collect your grass cuttings to be used as a mulch elsewhere instead of leaving each cut on the lawn. This feature can also be useful if you tend to let your lawn get overgrown from time to time as long grass can reduce the effectiveness of a mulching mower, meaning that larger and less finely cut deposits get made on the lawn, which can impede its growth.
