Birds, Mammals and Wildlife Gardening – Big Garden Birdwatch

This takes place on 27-28 January 2007, and details can be found at http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/. According to the RSPB, all you need to take part is a pen, paper and an hour to spare.

  1. Get pen and paper to help you record what you see
  2. During the hour, write down the highest number of each species that you see at one time
  3. Go online and submit your results.
  4. You don't have to be an expert to take part, as the web pages will help you identify which species you see. You're most likely to see birds in the Big Garden Birdwatch top 20, so check this guide for more information about those species. For more unusual birds, there is also an online A-Z of birds that shows all the UK's bird species with information about other similar species, audio clips of their songs and calls, and video clips so you can see their behaviour.

You can do your Birdwatch at any time on either Saturday 27 or Sunday 28 January, the time of day doesn't matter to the survey results because such a vast number of people take part that a good spread of times throughout the day is inevitable. Birds are more active first thing in the morning, when they need to feed to recover from a chilly night, so you are more likely to see lots of action if you do your Birdwatch then.

You don't even have to have a garden, as you can do your Birdwatch in a local park. Find a spot where you can sit quietly for an hour. You only need to record the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time - not the total number you see in the whole hour. This makes sure that you don't count the same bird twice. There is no need to record birds that you see flying over your survey area just those that have perched or landed.
