Garden Jobs For May
Flowers
- Make sure you’re tying back the climbers, like clematis and honeysuckle or they will get into a real mess. This is a good time to tackle climbing roses too, before the flowers emerge because you don’t want to be destroying floral displays by trying to tie them back to their arches or pergolas in a month’s time.
- Spray roses against blackspot
- Remove spring bedding plants from borders as soon as they begin to fade.
Containers
- Feed and water bulbs that have died back
- Buy frost tender plants and set them in pots outside towards the end of the month. Harden them off first though by putting them outside in the day but taking them in a night
- Check pots for pests like slugs, snails and vine weevil and treat as necessary
- Feed strawberries for a good crop.
Lawn
- New lawns that were sown last month will now be ready for their first cut
- Water new lawns during dry spells, preferably in the early morning or evening, but not with a sprinkler which tends to wash the roots out of the ground.
General
- Ensure new plants are all watered during dry spells – water in the evening and don’t waterlog
- Weeds put on a growth spurt now – this is a good time to apply systemic weedkillers
- Clean out the pond if necessary – feed fish once a day but cut back on feeding if there is food left in the water after ten minutes – they should be feeding themselves from your pond plants and insect life now.
